🔎 Use case · Research & documents / OCR
What's the best AI tool for research and documents (including OCR)?
Short answer
For researching your own documents, Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM) is the best place to start: it's free, answers only from the sources you upload, and turns them into reports, slides and audio overviews. For heavy multi-step analysis of very long material, Google's new Gemini 4 Argon has a 1M-token limit. If you need to turn piles of scanned PDFs into clean text first, use the free, open Indra OCR.

Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM)
Established pickBest for: Turning your own documents into answers, reports and study aids, with answers grounded in your sources.
Verdict: Upload your sources and ask questions. Answers stay grounded in what you provided, which cuts down on made-up facts. It also generates reports, mind maps, audio and video overviews, data tables and slide decks from the same sources. Google renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook in July 2026.
Price: Free (up to 50 sources per notebook). Higher limits with Google AI Plus, Pro or Ultra. (checked 2026-10-15)

Gemini 4 Argon
New · Issue #1Best for: Heavy work like large codebase refactors, finance and legal analysis, long-document and video understanding.
Verdict: The biggest model release of the fortnight, with a 1M-token unified input-output limit. Google says it ranks #1 on the Vals Index. The intro API price is aggressive but doubles on Dec 1. Consumers need a Google AI Pro or Ultra plan, and it isn't on the free API tier.
Price: API $2 per 1M input / $10 per 1M output tokens through Nov 30, 2026, then $4 / $20. Consumer access on Google AI Pro/Ultra in the Gemini app. (checked 2026-10-15)

Indra OCR (Datalab)
New · Issue #1Best for: Anyone feeding piles of PDFs or scans into an AI workflow on plain CPUs.
Verdict: A 1M-parameter model that, by Datalab's benchmarks, reads up to 49 pages/second on 32 CPU cores and outputs markdown or JSON with layout and reading order. It's honest about its limits: no handwriting, and complex tables lose structure. For clean print, it's an easy pip install.
Price: Free open weights (Hugging Face lists an OpenRAIL license). Datalab's managed API has a free tier. (checked 2026-10-15)
